Dr. Jose George
Dr. Jose George teaches Political Science and public Administrative at the Department of Civics and Politics, University of Mumbai- 400 098 since 1987 and is a Reader there since 1994. Earlier Dr. Jose taught Politics at St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri. Kozhikode, Kerala (1981-82) and Indian institute for Regional Development Studies, Kottayam, Kerala (1982-87). He was born in a marginal farmer’s family in 1954 as the seventh child of eleven children of Shri. Varkey and Smt. Annakutty of Manchappillil House, Perumpallichira Village, Thoudpuzha Taluk, Idikki district of Kerala State. He had his Primary and Upper Primary schooling (1959-65) from St. George School, Muthalakkodam, Thodupuzha, and Secondary Schooling from St. Thomas School (1965-69) of his native village, Nadavayal, Wayanad district of Kerala. He did his Pre-Degree Course (1969-71) from Newman College Thodupuzha, and B.A. (1971-74) from St. Thomas College, Palai, of Kerala State. He took his M.A. (1974-76) and LL.B. (1977) degrees from Jabalpur University, Madhya Pradesh. After a brief spell as a Lawyer at Kalpetta courts of Wayanad district, he joined the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and took M.Phil (1978-80) and Ph.D. (1985) from the Centre for Political Studies, School of Social Sciences there. Dr. Jose George successfully combines his academic work with his Social and Teachers Union / political activities. He holds several responsible positions in professional and academic Bodies and Teacher’s Union. He is in the Executive Committee of the Indian Political Science Association and Indian Public Administration association. He is an elected member of the Senate of the University of Mumbai since 1994 and Management Council (Syndicate) since 2000. He is in the General Council of the Maharashtra Federation of University and College Teachers Organization (MFUCTO), and Vice-President of the Bombay University and College Teachers Union (BUCTU).
