Jayaprakash Narayan, widely known as JP, was a great freedom fighter and political leader. He was one of the few leaders of modern India, who fought for its independence and took part in active politics for a long time, after it become independence. He did his higher studies in United States. After returning to India, JP joined Indian National Congress on the invitation of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1929. Mahatma Gandhi was his mentor in Congress. During independence movement, he was arrested, jailed, and tortured, several times by the British. He won particular fame, during Quit India movement. He was one of the founders of the Congress Socialist Party, a left-wing group, within the Congress. Later, he became deeply disillusioned with the practical experience of socialism in Nehru`s India. Then, he led a movement against corruption and emergency, which led to the installment of the first non-congress government at the centre. In 1998, he was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna award in recognition to his social service. Other awarded included, the Magsaysay award for Public Service. JP is honourably referred to with the august title, Lok Nayak, meaning; `People`s Leader`.
