In the five-year integrated professional law degree programme B.A LL.B of University of Mumbai, the introduction to ‘Logic’ is to orient students to understand significance of logical concepts and principles, argumentation, clarity and precision as required to resolve legal disputes, disagreements, and conflicts.
Logic is a tool about reasoning, the dispensing of justice is greatly aided by the basic concepts of inductive and deductive reasoning. Even legislators in the framing of laws have to take into account the ethical and socio-economic implications of the laws that are passed.
In the syllabus, we have incorporated not only logical concepts and reasoning but have raised ethical questions that arise when Laws are implemented. The judicial system has the arduous task of interpreting laws and ensuring its just application. We think that the modules in the syllabus will contribute not only towards sharpening the minds of students but expanding their mental horizons to see broader perspective which will aid them as defenders of the legal system.
