Improving productivity is a major factor in facing the challenge of competition and this involves driving down the cost of all aspects of business activities, especially in the area of materials. The importance of materials in an organisation and performance has resulted in the development of an organised body of knowledge on how to manage materials. This discipline is known as materials management.
