The Study attempts to review the operational performance of Road Passenger Transport Services in India in General, and Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in particular. The bus transportation, the primary mode of primary mode of transport having wide connectivity and accessibility offers personalized services to one and all, who live in the rural, remote and hilly areas. Because of its easy availability in operation, adaptability to individual needs, and reliability, bus transport also serves as a feeder service to rail and traffic. In view of such importance that the State Transport Undertaking (STUs) have, the author has made an in-depth study of the various factors related to it. The work present the appraisal of the STUs in terms of physical, financial and quality measures, which are very useful to the stakeholders. Apart from the usual parameters employed to assess the performance of the quality passenger services of STUs like: regularity, reliability and safety, the present study also applies the unique parameters: coverage of road networks, service level, and type of service mix and accessibility of transport services. for a minute analysis. The study has much utility value as it envisages systematization of the passenger road transport services. It is a much sought after and a welcome study in the wake of the tremendous pressure mounting on the STUs for better performance. The book may serve as a ready reckoner for the people involved and also to the respective Government, and State Transport Undertaking not only in India but also abroad. The study assumes much significance as it reaches to the concrete conclusion and subsequently, valuable suggestion have been made to this effect.
