The author, Sharmila Chandra, was born in Kolkata in the sixties. She completed her graduation with First Class Honours in Geography from Lady Brabourne College, Kolkata and was awarded a National Scholarship. She has a very distinguished academic record throughout her career. She completed her Post Graduation from Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, in 1988 and stood First Class First in the M.A. examination. Sharmila Chandra did Ph.D. in Cultural Geography from the Department of Geography, Visva Bharati, Santiniketan. She was awarded a Post Doctoral Fellowship by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) in 2013. She completed her Post Doctoral studies in Tourism Geography in 2015. Thereafter, she has been engaged in active research in Social and Cultural Geography. She has a number of papers in reputed journals as well as a book to her credit. She has also delivered lectures at a number of conferences in India and abroad and taught in various colleges and universities as a visiting lecturer. Sharmila Chandra is a member of the Foundation of Practising Geographers, Kolkata; the National Environmental Science Academy, New Delhi; the Deccan Geographical Society, Pune and various other academic organisations. Her main interests are Cultural Geography and Environmental Geography.
