Best exploration of technology is based on better understanding of fundamental principles of Physics. Keeping this in mind, the text book entitled “Applied Physics”, which caters the complete syllabus of B.Tech I sem- Chemical engineering Chemical and technology Bio technology course of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University has been written in a concise and very simple way. Every Chapter at arts with simple introduction and then related topics are covered with detailed description with the help of figures. Every chapter ends with list of formulae, solved problems unsolved exercise and review questions to test the knowledge and understanding acquired by the students after going through the chapter.

Syllabus of B.Tech Semester-I contain 6 units, starting with Chapter I on Viscosity which is internal friction in fluid. Basic concepts of liquid flow, viscosity, its cause and effect on liquids, verious methods employed for the dertermination of viscosity of liquids like glycerin, castor oil, alcohol etc are explained in detail.

Chapter 2 is on Surface tension, which is a commpnoly observed phenomenon in our daily life. This phenomenon explains why mercury when placed on a table splits up into number of spheres of diffrent sizes, water bead on a leaf, raindrops and soap bubble are spherical in shape, water dripping from a tap is spherical etc. This chapter deals with surface tension and its occurrence, the effect of surface tenstion, and various methods such as Searl’s torsion balance method, Jaeger’s method and Quincke’s method to determine the surface tenstion of the liquids.

Chapter 3. Interference explain the root causes of the striking colour effects caused by white light on soap bubble, oil slick, iridescence of morph butterfly, feathers of peacock, which are well now to us. Experiments based on this phenomenon and their applications are also illustrated.

Chapter 4 is on Polarisation the phenomenon that proved the nature of light. This chapter mainly deals with the property of one sideness of light, types of polarized light, various methods to obtain and detect plane, circularly and elliptically polarised light.

Chapter 5 is on Lasers an invention in search of application is now finding their application in almost every filed. Basic concept of laser operation, requirements for laser production are explained in detail by considering Ruby, He-Ne, Semi conductor diode laser as examples.

Chapter 6 is on Pumps and gauges deals with ultra high vacuum technology and various devices used to measure these low pressures are descussed in detail.
