The present book has been prepared for students of Second Year, B.Com., Fourth Semester, University of Mumbai. In accordance with the requirements of the syllabus, the discussion in divided into three units. The coverage, organization and contents of these units are as follows:
Unit 1 on ‘Basic Issues in Economic Development’ consists of seven chapter. The first chapter discusses the new economic policy enunciated in 1991. The next two chapters focus on trends in national and per capita income and sectoral composition of income. The fourth chapter discusses the occupational structure of the population while the next two chapters are conceded with inclusive growth and human development. The last chapter 7 – of this unit discusses the employment trends and the problem of unemployment.
Unit 2 on ‘Agriculture, Industry and Services Sector’ consists of eight chapters. The first four chapters of this unit discuss some important issues related to the agricultural sector like agricultural production and productivity trends, agriculture policy, food security and the impact of WTO on Indian agriculture. The next three chapters focus on the industrial sector of the Indian economy and discuss industrial production trends since 1991 and industrial diversification, MRTP and Competition Act, and issues pertaining to the small-scale industries. The last chapter of this unit (Chapter 15) discusses the growth and performance of the services sector since 1991.
Unit 3 on ‘Banking and Monetary Policy Since 1991’ consists of three chapter. Chapter 16 focuses on commercial banking in India and examines the banking development in the planning period, banking structure, and banking sector reforms since 1991. Chapter 17 discusses the measures of money supply being used by RBI, functions of RBI, and its monetary policy in detail. Chapter 18, which is the last chapter of the book, highlights the inflationary trends in the economy, causes of inflation and the anti-inflationary policy of the government.
