The present book, entitled “Chemistry in Cosmetics” is an introduction to provide information on commonly used cosmetics and their chemistry. It is an open elective subject for first-year students as per the NEP 2020 guidelines of the University of Mumbai. We wrote this book to assist undergraduate students who do not have a background in chemistry.
This book covers the importance and history of Chemistry in Cosmetics. We cover some important terminology and commonly used chemicals with various types of cosmetics along with their roles. We also explained different chemical components of the cosmetics and possible health hazards due to chemicals used in Cosmetics. Cosmetic chemistry is the art and science of formulating products. The present book improves knowledge about the appearance and health of the skin, hair, and nails and its chemistry involves understanding how chemicals interact to achieve desired effects on the skin. This book invites you to explore the interesting ways of cosmetic products and various contents such as ingredients, emollients, colourants, antioxidants, preservatives, and active compounds. Each ingredient serves a specific purpose.
