It gives us great pleasure to bring out this edition of Organic Chemistry prescribed by University of Mumbai for F.Y. B.Sc. class. This book written according to new syllabus will come into effect from academic year 2024-25.
In Semester I, the theoretical aspects of Organic Chemistry such as hybridization, electronic effects, etc. have been thoroughly explained. Structure of alkane, alkene and alkyne is explained giving emphasis on type of bonding. The concept of conformation and its application to open and closed chain compounds is explained.
The basic principles of stereochemistry is covered in Semester I. The use of IUPAC System of Nomenclature for naming all types of compounds, open chains as well as cyclic compounds is clearly explained.
In Semester II, the reactions of functional group are explained. The student is familiarized with interconversion of compounds using series of reactions. More importance is given to mechanism of reaction by giving emphasis on type of bond fission, reactive species formed and their relative stabilities, and how they are changed to products.
The concept of aromaticity and the difference in the reactions of aliphatic aromatic compounds is brought out.
A large number of exercises have been given at the end of each chapter for the students to practice and become perfect. We hope that this book will be useful to students as well as the teachers.
