The present study pertains to this administrative area, the old Central Provinces and Berar. The Central Provinces were constituted in 1861. Certain changes in the area took place immediately after, by the addition of Sambalpur and Nimar. In 1874, by the transfer to Madras of some portions, a further change took place. Berar came under the administration of the Central Provinces in 1903 and for all practical purposes was a part of it. In 1936, it formerly became a part of the province. After the transfer of Sambalpur area in 1905 to Bengal, the Province remained the same for the rest of the period under study. So, though the state came to be known as Madhya Pradesh after the inaugration of the Constitution, so far as the period under study is concerned, it was either `Central Provinces`or `Central Provinces and Berar.`
