In the present era of unprecedented environmental challenges, the need for a deeper understanding of the relationship between human society and the natural world has never been greater. Environmental Issues and Management has been developed as an interdisciplinary open elective for second year students, aiming to build on their foundational knowledge and broaden their perspective on critical global and local environmental concerns. The curriculum addresses the concept of environment and provides an overview of pressing environmental issues such as pollution, habitat loss, climate change, and resource depletion. It introduces students to the importance of environmental conservation and protection, examining methods, practices, and policies that have evolved over time. A study of environmental movements, both national and international, highlights the collective efforts undertaken to safeguard ecosystems and ensure ecological balance. A key component of the course is the exploration of sustainable development. Students are introduced to its meaning, evolution, and the significance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular focus on goals that address environmental and social priorities. These include climate action, life below water, life on land, sustainable cities and communities, clean water and sanitation, gender equality, sustainable agriculture and industries, responsible consumption and production, and the eradication of poverty and hunger. By engaging with these themes, students gain an appreciation of the interconnected nature of environmental, social, and economic systems. The course is designed not only to inform but also to empower. It encourages students to critically evaluate environmental challenges, develop problem-solving strategies, and adopt sustainable practices in both personal and professional contexts. Through this process, they are prepared to become active contributors to sustainable development, capable of engaging with complex issues from multiple perspectives. As an interdisciplinary open elective, Environmental Issues and Management is relevant across academic disciplines and professional pathways.
