Indira Priyadarshini Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India for three consecutive terms and for a fourth term until her assassination − a total of fifteen years. She was India`s first, and to date the only, female prime minister. She was partly educated in India and then in Britain. Born in the politically influential Nehru Family, she grew up in an intensely political atmosphere. Returning to India from Oxford, she became involved in the Indian independence movement. She was President of Indian National Congress also. After her father`s death, she became a member of Lal Bahadur Shastri`s cabinet. She was made the Prime Minister after Shastri. She led the nation as Prime Minister, during the decisive victory in the 1971 war with Pakistan.
