As is clear from the title, this book aims to provide conceptual knowledge of the basic sciences as relevant to the discipline of nuclear medicine. It includes the basic physics, radiation detection, Gamma Camera imaging, PET/CT imaging, imaging protocols, radiopharmacy, internal Dosimetry, counting statistics, medical cyclotron, radiobiology and radiation safety in nuclear medicine. The content in each chapter provides the basic information as is required for the beginners in nuclear medicine. The contents in most of the chapters along with the figures have been taken from the book entitled “Basic Physics and Radiation Safety in Nuclear Medicine, 2nd edition (ed GS Pant)” with permission of the publisher after necessary revision wherever required. The chapter on radiopharmacy, particularly on quality control, has been freshly written. The chapter on internal Dosimetry has been made as simple as could be possible without losing the necessary information. A chapter on Imaging protocols in nuclear medicine may be useful for beginners. The chapter on compartment model provides the brief introduction to the subject from which one can start and build up further knowledge.

The book has 15 chapters, divided into seven parts. The first part is devoted to basic atomic and nuclear physics, interaction of radiation and radioactivity. The second part deals with the radiation detectors, in-vitro and in-vivo detection of radiation with quality control procedures for the equipment involved. This includes the radionuclide dose calibrator, well counter and thyroid probe. The third part with three chapters deals with the nuclear medicine imaging (planar gamma camera and SPECT imaging, Image filtering and PET imaging). The fourth part of the book includes the radiopharmaceuticals in brief and their quality control procedures. This chapter also describes the quality control procedure for 18F-FDG in a cyclotron quality control laboratory. Fifth part is on imaging protocols with three chapters on PET/CT, SPECT/CT, and planar gamma camera imaging. Sixth part has four chapters namely, Internal dosimetry, statistics, cyclotron and compartment model. The seventh part of the book is devoted to radiobiology and radiation safety as is essential in nuclear medicine.

We feel that the students and teachers in nuclear medicine and allied sciences will find this book useful and handy.
