In recent times there has been a concern over the over exploitation of the aquatic resources and its impact on the quality of life of fisherfolk community. For a sustainable fisheries the compatibility between the two resources is desirable. Therefore, the need for a study of the coasted fisherfolk was strongly, felt in an attempt to explore the compatibility between the aquatic resources and the fishing community.

Accordingly a comprehensive study was undertaken in a coasted district of Maharashtra as part of an international project Strengthening of Research and Training in Population and Development Dynamics of Rural Communities funded by UNFRA and executed by FAO through the central Institute of Fisheries Education of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. This treatise incorporates the finding of this study. It is hoped that it will prove useful to the academicians, researchers and students in the field of fisheries sciences. Any suggestions for the improvement of the book will be appreciated.
