We are delighted to present this book titled “Non-Conventional Energy Sources” designed for the Open Elective course as per the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP-2020). This book aims to equip undergraduate students with a comprehensive understanding of various energy sources, with a particular emphasis on sustainable and renewable alternatives to conventional fossil fuels.
The growing energy demands and pressing environmental challenges call for a fundamental shift in how energy is produced and consumed. With this in mind, the course — and this accompanying textbook — has been structured to provide essential knowledge about both conventional and nonconventional energy resources, their impact on the environment, and the technologies that support cleaner energy alternatives.
The book is divided into two main units. The first unit provides an overview of energy sources, the global and Indian energy scenario, and the limitations of traditional energy forms such as coal, oil, gas, and nuclear energy. It also introduces the urgent need for renewable energy. The second unit elaborates on various renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, ocean thermal energy, and biomass. Important environmental topics such as energy audits and carbon footprint analysis are also included to provide students with a holistic perspective.
